GM Keith Arkell was held to draws a few more times than he may have like in the European Senior Chess Championships. Nevertheless, he finished 4th, having gone unbeaten! His final round win vs Manlio Salvetti saw him win an interesting endgame. #chess#englishchess

This July, Sussex University Chess is proud to present a full week of chess in Brighton, combining elite and amateur play along with various other community activities to make up the Sussex Chess Festival 2026.
Alongside the Sussex University Masters and 5th Sussex University Chess Congress, the festival will also feature a Summer School with coaching groups organised by playing strength, personalised clinics, and simultaneous exhibitions. There will also be opportunities to partake in an arbiter training course, and a chess parents panel.
Note, the Masters entry fee rises on 28th June, so early registration is encouraged!

In Rd 6 of the European Senior Chess Championship, Spanish IM Michael Anthony Rahal Vives blundered early on vs GM Daniel Gormally. 14. Bg5 ensured black would lose material, prompting the resignation. 4.5/6 for Gormally so far. #chess#englishchess
The European Senior Chess Championship continued into Rd 5 today. In the 65 , GM Keith Arkell has had some frustrating draws early on. He has recovered with back-to-back wins, today outplaying Jean-Pierre Mailfert after a very off-piste opening! #chess#englishchess
The European Women's Chess Championship finished yesterday. Despite an early charge, WGM Elmira Mirzoeva fell away in the second half. She placed 76th with 5.5/11. Congratulations to Ukrainian WFM Anastasiia Hnatyshyn, who won the tournament with 9/11. #chess#englishchess
