I collect and curate engineering stories. I continue to be fascinated by semiconductor manufacturing processes, in particular defect occurrence. I write, post, tweet regarding technical leadership. I advocate for all nuero-diversities

Remembering @tmeixner this evening at a faith formation event, Roman Catholic. Hope was mentioned multiple times. I remembered that my brother' s posting of this quote was shared in the first family statement after his brutal murder. Crying has not been easy. Tears come now.
Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for.

Having worked for someone senior enough - these people don’t run their own lives. They don’t cook. They don’t clean. Don’t do groceries. Don’t do the garden. Don’t pick up kids. Don’t fetch their own medicine or dry cleaning or correspondence. 60 hrs is doable. FOR THEM.

Instead of listing my publications, as the year draws to an end, I want to put pressure on the commonplace assumption that productivity must always increase. Good research is disruptive and thinking time is central to high quality scholarship and necessary for disruptive research

#liveliketom and be excited that there is competition for urban flood and water quality management. Don't forget that local elections affect your neighborhoods more than the federal elections.

A business school friend always likes to remind people how few new firms receive venture capital funding. By most measures, it's less than 1%. Given that reality, it's incredible how much cultural energy and attention it hoovers up, including from technology studies.

Spot-on quality of feedback matters
Wondering why we don’t have more women and Black people in leadership roles? Many are quick to point to a pipeline problem, but I believe it comes down to one word: feedback. Read more in my guest article for HRM Outlook hrmoutlook.com/feedback-ineq… #Inclusion #Allyship

I no longer believe you can "benefit humanity" by building AGI. Indeed, the exact opposite: Building AGI is placing us on a direct trajectory of harming humanity overall.

Reminder about the importance of getting good at recovering from incidents: 1. You can’t prevent all incidents from occurring. 2. You must recover from all of the incidents that occur.

Indeed a less experienced developer can only the debug skills by struggling. And a more senior developer needs to permit it. Same thing holds for engineering
Being a senior developer is being able to fix the bug in 5 minutes But having the discipline to assign it to a team member knowing it’ll take them 4 hours

Ah yes circa 1986 my first full time engineering job, I was told to smile as I walked out of the lab deep in thought
A gem from my newsletter archive: Telling women to smile is a form of harassment. It objectifies women, implying their emotions and appearance ought to be controlled. That they exist for the pleasure of others. I love Brie Larson's epic response when she was told to smile. šŸ‘‡

Adore this quote. In tangent with a Napoleon quote that I like about once you deliberate an action go do it

ā€œThe most difficult thing is the decision to act. The rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process, is its own reward.ā€ā€‹ — Amelia Earhart

Certain types of sea urchins will pick up a shell with their tube feet and ā€˜wear’ it, with a behavior known as ā€œcovering reactionā€, mainly because they shy away from light. So aquarium enthusiasts 3D-printed tiny hats and they wear them.

ICYMI: LinkedIn is using your data to train its AI by default. I was opted-in without giving explicit consent; you may be too. The opt-out link is here: linkedin.com/mypreferences/d… Steps: Click "Me" on top, Settings and Privacy > Data Privacy > Data for Generative AI Improvement
LinkedIn is now using everyone's content to train their AI tool -- they just auto opted everyone in. I recommend opting out now (AND that orgs put an end to auto opt-in, it's not cool) Opt out steps: Settings and Privacy > Data Privacy > Data for Generative AI Improvement (OFF)

Exactly the point! When I worked at @intel I enjoyed writing my status report because it provided me an opportunity to think about not just what I did but why, what comes next, when is the next point to evaluate a technology

FACT CHECK (Share this as much as the misinformation!) CLAIM: Undocumented Haitian immigrants are stealing and eating people’s pets in Springfield, Ohio. TRUTH: Absolutely false! - The woman featured in the video is not Haitian; her name is Telia Ferrell, and she’s a U.S. citizen who has been a registered voter for six years. - The Springfield Police Department confirmed they have received zero reports of pets being stolen or eaten. - The body-cam video in question was not filmed in Springfield, Ohio, but in Canton, Ohio. - Ian Miles Cheong, a controversial online personality, has played a key role in spreading this rumor. He has been involved with Russian state-run media, is based in Malaysia, living in Vatican City, and has no known affiliation with Springfield or this incident. Let’s stick to the facts and stop the spread of harmful rumors!

Pro tip: when dealing with incidents, try to have only one incident at a time. It’s much harder to deal with co-incident incidents.
