16 tips to quit music as a Muslim🧵
1) make sincere intention to leave this sin for Allah’s sake. If your intention is not pure, you’ll seldom see success in your endeavour
2) It’s Allah we ask for help, as stated in surah fatiha, so ask for His help as you strive to quit music
3) understand the wisdom behind why music is forbidden. Observe the impacts it has on your state of mind, behaviour & thought patterns. Perhaps it even affects your salah! For example, there are probably times when you’re trying to pray but a song is stuck in your head
4) don’t wear earphones or headphones when you’re out and about. You’re more likely to listen to music with earphones than you are to play it out loud in public.
5) delete Spotify & Apple Music. Bin your CDs & get rid of your instruments. Make it difficult to listen to music!
6) avoid media with haram elements in them. You might hear a catchy song on a tiktok reel that gets stuck in your head
7) do your best to avoid places that have music playing. If you cannot avoid them, don’t actively listen to the music. Hearing is not the same as listening
8) if you’re at the gym, replace music with vocal only nasheeds (not acapella or beatboxing!) - avoid listening to the Quran when weightlifting so the Quran is not “background noise”
9) when you’re in the car or at home, listen to Quran or Islamic lectures instead of music
10) avoid those who play/listen to music infront of you. This applies online too. Avoid accounts that post music
11) spend as much time as you can in the mosques. I don’t know how to explain it, but the more time you spend there, the more of a “shield” you build up against sin
12) create a punishment for each time you listen to music. Perhaps each time you listen to music you have to give £50 to charity (shaytaan would hate that!). Or perhaps you forfeit your right to play 8-a-side football this week
13) create a reward for each milestone you pass without listening to music. If you go a week without listening to music, treat yourself to some new shoes. If you go a month without listening to music, how about a new suit? If you go 12 months, what about a watch or holiday?
14) Do not think that “it’s only music”, for love of music and love of the Quran cannot coexist in the heart of man. Music - as a sin itself - is a gateway to many other sins. Don’t downplay it’s severity in order to make yourself feel better about sinning
15) remind yourself of the punishment of Allah & fear Him. After all, Allah forgives major sins so don’t despair but He also punishes minor sins so don’t be deceived. The prophet ﷺ listed instruments alongside alcohol and Zina as unlawful, which shows its magnitude (bukhari 5590)
16) be patient, but act with urgency. I say this because people see the term “be patient” and translate it to inaction (i.e with hijab journeys). We need to hasten to abandon sins but understand that it may take time and we may relapse, in which case we make tawbah renew our efforts
This is all the stuff that helped me
In sha Allah it helps you too
