Many countries exclude renewable energy projects from being built on certain areas of land (e.g. National Parks, high-quality farmland) to protect the environment & food security. In this 🧵, I summarise my latest paper looking at the implications of using such exclusions (1/7)

Removal of hedges to make larger fields is but one factor leading to massive biodiversity declines in farmed landscapes. This sequence reveals how this bit of landscape went from about 40 fields to around half that.
This is a remarkable piece of work. 90 years of changes in landuse on a tiny corner of England. Extensively researched. Multiply by thousands and you can understand the collapse of biodiversity and increased flash flooding. By @outhwaitegeorge

After the economic nonsense and environmental degradation proposed by Rees-Mogg and Co promoting fracking and curtailing wind and solar power, it’s important to recognise that some in the Conservative Party are promoting sensible policies for cheaper, greener energy
So far, 3⃣2⃣ Conservative MPs have signed the amendment to end the onshore wind ban. We can lower people's energy bills by building new cheap, clean onshore wind farms where communities agree. It's time to unlock Britain's wind power potential.

Right, I've made a thread to try and clarify the sheer weight of public, business, civil society and political support for @SimonClarkeMP's onshore wind amendment. It's enormous. 1/10
In today’s @Telegraph, I make the urgent case for why we should drop our blanket ban on onshore wind, and let communities decide. It cuts bills, cuts emissions and strengthens our energy security. telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/11…
