Great meeting with APPG Chair @PutneyFleur and Climate Minister @KatieJWhite on setting Carbon Budget 7 into law.
Across the UK, polling consistently shows that people of all backgrounds and politics care deeply about the environment and want the government to act.
Happy World Ocean Day! 🌊
We are calling on the government to ratify the Global Ocean Treaty and champion the designation of the Sargasso Sea as a protected marine sanctuary.
This briefing highlights the urgent action needed from the government 👇

🌳Environment APPG Vice Chair @AdrianRamsay raises serious concerns over reports that by 2030 the UK’s food, water and ecosystems could face collapse.
He urges for clarity from the government on the action being taken in response. 🚜

🌳 Trees, trees, trees!
⏱️ Just had 2 minutes in the debate on nation preparedness for emergencies because so many MPs also wanted to speak.
💦 🔥 Here’s my speech about the @EnvironmentAPPG enquiry into resilience to extreme weather events.
@WoodlandTrust@Natures_Voice
🌲Kew warns climate change is killing trees, echoing what we heard in our adaptation inquiry. As the heatwave shows, trees are vital infrastructure for cooling, so adapting nature to extreme weather is essential.🌲

On Monday, the Environment APPG held the second session of our inquiry: “Is the UK prepared? Resilience in floods, fires and food as climate impacts rise” with @PutneyFleur and Lord Krebs. 🧑🌾⛈️
We heard from Emily Hunter of @WoodlandTrust Kevin Martin of Kew Gardens and Bethany Chamberlain of @Natures_Voice on the risks to habitats like temperate rainforests, coastal saltmarshes and peatlands. They emphasised the need for nature-based solutions to mitigate climate risks
Our second panel Gareth Morgan of @SoilAssociation , Martin Lines of @NFFNUK and Dmitry Feoktistov of @NFUPolitical detailed how farm livelihoods are at risk. They called for a focus on soil health, crop diversity, water management and supply chain coordination
On Wednesday’s Oral Questions on Plastic Pollution @RosieBoycott highlights that only 9% of plastic packaging is recycled. ♻️
A strong Extended Produced Responsibility could get companies to change their plastic packaging to make it more suitable to recycle.
@baroness_brown asks the Minister to review the definition of ‘natural polymer’ used in plastic food packaging.
The use of natural polymers beyond cellulose could make packaging fully recyclable. ♻️🗑️

Bottom trawling in our Marine Protected Areas threatens the sustainability and prosperity of our fisheries and coastal communities.
Yesterday in @UKHouseofLords I asked the Government when they would act 👇
@OceanaUK@WildlifeTrusts
Bottom trawling causes irreversible damage to our oceans 🌊
@liz_sugg highlights how heavy nets used by large fishing corporations devastate marine life and threaten coastal livelihoods 🐟
Banning this gear in 41 more MPAs would be a major step forward

Baroness Sheehan asked how progress on 30x30 nature recovery targets is measured 🌍
The Minister acknowledged the challenges of protecting our seas and noted that plans to extend the ban on bottom trawling gear to 41 MPAs would be a key step towards meeting 30x30 targets

The final panel of Sarah Mukherjee of @ISEPglobal, Elisabeth Sullivan of @techUK and David Steen of @UKGBC urged the government to treat climate risks as cascading and interdependent rather than separate, and to work with nature not against it.
