Been tweeting reviews for every single film I’ve watched for almost 7 years, but because X is kinda annoying to be on, I’m gonna retire this account. I’ll still review every film I watch on letterboxd so follow me there if ya want: boxd.it/2HG5 Thanks for following!

OPENING NIGHT (Cassavetes. 1977) - A film about the production of a play, where the acting in the play within the film is actually great. Gena Rowlands is incredible. Brilliant writing and directing. The last third of this is electrifying. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

TRAP (Shyamalan. 2024) - A hilarious film, I think at times intentionally and at times unintentionally. A lot of fun to watch. Shyamalan still doing cool stuff with the camera. Hartnett really going for it in this, an excellent performance. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

MEEK’S CUTOFF (Reichardt. 2011) 🔁 - A western that sets aside the action and violence associated with the genre in favor of pure high-plains survival. Feels like a believable representation of this period, and the wonderful performances punctuate that realism. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (Kubrick. 1968) 🔁 - Watched at a 70mm screening this time, so now I’ve seen this film basically every way that you can. I never feel close to cracking this one, which is fine with such a rich, visually magnificent spectacle like this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TWISTERS (Chung. 2024) - Was taken out of the film every time it drifted into heavy backstory and character motivation stuff. But loved all the parts where they were wranglin’ ‘nados. Pretty fun. Glen Powell rules. He looks like the cowboy emoji in this. 🤠 ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

SECONDS (Frankenheimer. 1966) - Uses editing and camerawork to immediately unnerve and keeps that vibe going all the way through. Rock Hudson is incredible in this, I need to watch more of his work. A chilling film, will be thinking about it for a bit. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

SWEET CHARITY (Fosse. 1969) - Fosse doing Simon doing Fellini works a lot for me. I’m a big fan of the Fosse-style of dancing, the numbers in this are excellent. A bit too long of a film. Shirley MacLaine is fantastic in this, some of the best mid-dance face-acting. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

THE WILD BUNCH (Peckinpah. 1969) 🔁 - One of the sweatiest, dirtiest, bloodiest westerns I’ve seen. You can almost smell the odor of these men coming off the screen. Excellent set pieces, and really emphasizes the violent chaos of a shootout. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

THE SHOOTING (Hellman. 1966) - A western that I felt like I dreamed instead of watched, especially towards the end. There’s weirdly a lot of tension, but doesn’t feel like a lot of danger throughout. Will need a rewatch to connect to this one deeper. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

THE SEARCHERS (Ford. 1956) 🔁 - Watched at a 70mm screening with a crowd that was super into it. Best way to see this film. Looked incredible, all of the comedy landed, all of the intense shootouts landed. It played like one of the greatest films ever made. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

AFTER HOURS (Scorsese. 1985) 🔁 - If you’ve ever had to make it home super late at night in NYC, this film strikes a particular chord as the most hilariously unfortunate version of that scenario. Brilliant ensemble cast, led by a fantastic Griffin Dunne. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

DE PALMA (Baumbach & Paltrow. 2016) 🔁 - Every time a great director enters their 6th decade of movie making we should be commissioning someone to make a film in this exact style about them. Would like a deeper dive, but it made me want to watch some De Palma films. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

KINDS OF KINDNESS (Lanthimos. 2024) - Never boring, and all of the actors are pitch perfect to the Yorgos Lanthimos tone, but I think I would have rather watched a 2-hr version of any of these segments (especially the first one) instead of the 3-in-1 format here. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (Ford. 1962) - Wild that Jimmy Stewart was just the best actor working for several decades. A western that uses words and myth-making as weapons as much as it uses guns. A small-scale film, doesn’t need vast landscapes to look great. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

MCCABE & MRS. MILLER (Altman. 1971) 🔁 - Feels about as close as you can get to watching a living and breathing old western town without a time machine. One of Altman’s best. Julie Christie is amazing. Beatty, one of the great leading men, playing an absolute loser. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

BONE TOMAHAWK (Zahler. 2015) - A brutally realistic western, with characters experiencing violence and raw emotion as they face true horrors throughout. Some slow pacing, and moments that are painfully hard to sit through. Great performances. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

MAXXXINE (West. 2024) - Some bits of fun, mostly towards the beginning, but I think there was a little too much going on here. X and especially PEARL are more successful because they’re simpler and can get into the fun horror stuff with less plot to get through. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
