On May 3rd, 2026, my X/Twitter account was hacked for the first time. Luckily, I managed to recover it without too many issues.
A few days later, on May 10th, it was hacked again.. And this time, recovering it was much more difficult.
After contacting X Support, they confirmed that I was the rightful owner of the account and reverted the unauthorized changes back to me.
However, one very important thing was not restored: my username.
I had owned the username @np on Twitter since 2012. After the hack on May 10th, the attacker changed it to “youabitchnp222”.
I contacted email support three separate times asking for my original username to be restored. I received no meaningful response.
So I decided to contact X Premium Support. A support service I had to pay for. What did I get in return?
Bugged, nonsensical replies from Grok.
Apparently, an AI system that has had millions of dollars poured into it still struggles with understanding basic questions and responding properly. I’m attaching screenshots below.
Eventually, I managed to speak with an actual human from support. And the answer I received was basically since I can’t claim my old username back, I now have to pay for it.
So let me get this straight.
My account gets hacked. My data gets changed without my consent. X Support confirms that I am the rightful owner. But the username I had since 2012 is not restored and the “solution” is that I should pay and hope that maybe one day I can buy it back?
Is this seriously how account recovery and customer support are supposed to work?
I didn’t want to write this post publicly, but after another month of trying to contact support and getting nowhere, I don’t really have any other option.
I’m not asking for special treatment. I’m asking for my account to be fully restored after a confirmed hack including the username I owned for over a decade.
This situation is honestly embarrassing. Not just for support, but for the platform as a whole.
