Since I graduated 2022, life hasn't gone exactly the way I imagined.
On this edition of Creators’ Diary is
@UgoiykeS, a 25 year old Nautical Science graduate and a maritime cadet still trying to find her footing while building a global online career from Port Harcourt.
Since graduating in 2022 with a 2:1, life hasn’t exactly gone the way she imagined.
For the past few years, she has survived mostly on small online gigs ranging from ₦20k–₦50k, constantly trying different things just to stay afloat.
From content creation to social media management, KDP publishing, data annotation jobs, YouTube, and UGC creation, she has spent countless sleepless nights trying to build something meaningful online.
Aside from building online, Sonia is also a fellow in the maritime field currently looking for placement opportunities to complete her trainee phase.
She has already completed three(3) months onboard training and hopes to continue her maritime journey while balancing her creative career online.
But one of her biggest struggles has been simply being Nigerian.
She told me,
“Some international clients become interested until they hear I’m from Nigeria.”
One brand reached out for a UGC collaboration, discussed briefs, and everything looked promising until it was time to ship products. Then they suddenly said they couldn’t send products to Nigeria anymore.
Another client rejected her rates, came back later sounding interested again, then disappeared after reconsidering.
Still, she hasn’t stopped trying.
Sonia says one of the hardest parts of her journey is looking okay online while struggling behind the scenes.
“There are days electricity becomes a problem, and I have to look for where to charge my laptop just to keep working. I’ve spent hours in cybercafes trying to finish tasks or submit applications before deadlines.”
She has also faced setbacks from online platforms she depended on for income. Some opportunities ended unexpectedly after months of effort, while others never paid off the way she hoped. But despite the disappointments, she keeps learning, creating, and showing up.
Currently, she’s building two brands around mindset, faith, purpose, storytelling, and social media while also trying to grow her career as a creator and social media manager.
She also runs a YouTube channel where she shares videos about mindset, healing, relationships, purpose, and navigating life as a young creative trying to survive and grow.
According to Sonia,
“I may not be where I want financially yet, but I know I’m no longer the same person I was three years ago. I still believe something good will come out of all these struggles.”
When I asked her biggest lesson so far, she said this:
“Consistency is hard when life is unstable, but sometimes showing up tired is still better than disappearing completely.”
Sonia is currently open to:
• Maritime placement opportunities
• UGC collaborations
• Video ads creation
• Social media management roles
• Content strategy work
• Brand storytelling projects
