Every November is #FamilyCourtAwarenessMonth. Raising awareness on systemic issues that are placing children in harm's way. Sponsor of CA SB 331 #PiquisLaw
After 5 years of litigation in the family court, the application by former MP minister Andrew Griffiths, fought by his ex-wife Kate Kniveton MP, for contact with their child has been refused. My @tortoise report is now out, judgment link to follow - shorturl.at/jlyGO
Four years ago, on February 9th, 2020, we lost a bright light in our world. Keira Kagan, a 4-year-old full of joy and love for unicorns, was taken in a senseless act of violence. Though her time with us was tragically short, Keira's spirit and the love she radiated continue to inspire us. Through Keira's Law, her memory lives on, advocating for justice and change.
This unicorn image is a symbol of the innocence and joy she embodied.
Her’s is a legacy that calls on the judicial system to recognize the signs of domestic and intimate partner violence so that no other child is harmed. Together, let's spread love, kindness, and awareness in Keira's name.

Proposed amendments up for debate include a ban on instructing unregulated psychologists to make assessments of abuse victims and restrictions around allegations of “parental alienation” in the family courts. Short 🧵
🚨 A number of amendments to the Victims and Prisoners Bill will be debated in parliament this week – many of which are aimed at better protecting vulnerable people going through family courts in England and Wales

A positive outcome here, but this victim should never have had to go through this ‘court sanctioned abuse’. It is not 'parental alienation' to protect a child from an abuser. That's why we're calling to put a stop to parental alienation allegations against victims #VictimsBill
1/NEW: A father who was found to have raped his ex-partner after applying to the family court to spend more time with their son has been stripped of his parental responsibility and ordered to pay £30,000 towards the mother’s legal fees. My report for @TBIJshorturl.at/czDLR
This, or similar, should strongly be considered. Also need to ensure it doesn’t get repackaged as something else or re-naming it, which we have seen.

“Litigation involving child support and custody is one of the most common ways domestic-violence perpetrators prolong contact with their victims… Abusive fathers are “more than twice as likely” to petition for sole custody of their children”

The verdict in the custody trial of #TyandBrynlee Larson has been postponed a month to accommodate the father and the reunification therapist who defends 'parental alienation'. Follow me here for updates on this and other cases.

Contrary to some narratives, female intimate 'partner' violence and coercive control victim-survivors still face a massive uphill battle to be believed over their male abusers.
Great to have this article, co-authored with wonderful colleagues @ellenreeves110 @SilkeMeyer_DFV & Sandra Walklate, published in @VAWJournal: 'Incredible Women: Legal Systems Abuse, Coercive Control, and the Credibility of Victim-Survivors'. Read here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.…
Yesterday, Ty testified directly to the court in the custody case that will determine his future and could have far-reaching effects for survivors of abuse in family court:

#16DaysActivism There’s no longitudinal research on the outcomes of child removal in private law cases. It’s alarming that child removal is increasing with no evidence base to support it. See tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1… for a small scale study of its harmful consequences #NoExcuse
On this 2nd day of 16 Days of Activism I’d like to highlight the immense harm to mothers and children of child removal in private law family court proceedings, in the name of so-called parental alienation. This arguably breaches children’s & mothers’ Article 3 rights
🔔 In a new blog published today, a survivor writes to a #FamilyCourt judge and urges them to consider how they address coercive control within the family justice system.

#HerHagueStory have been told that next week a Hague judge will rule on the late Narkis Golan's case. It is likely that Narkis's vulnerable young son will be returned to Italy & his abusive father.
This is beyond brutal.
