Dad and I were at Nebraska cattlemen Midyear the last two days. We are under 20 head left to calve but I got this surprising photo today from Nicci. I was thinking she was gonna be open, which truthfully I would have preferred because at 19 she has more than done her job, and I’m going to have to think about some tough decisions. She probably doesn’t remember that the year she was born, the first iPhone came out, Netflix started streaming, and a Senator named Barack Obama announced his presidency. I’ve never named her as she’s nothing more than range cow but she does hold a special place in my heart. We may pretend that we don’t get attached…but we do❤️

nebraskacattlemen.org/disast… Another fire has taken off in Nebraska affecting cattle producers the last couple of days. Latest news this morning is it’s over 23,000 acres up in the northwest corner of the state. The Nebraska cattlemen relief fund is still collecting monetary donations to help with the massive wildfires that have occurred this year across the state. Please donate if you can, and if you are a producer, please apply for funding. You do not need to be a Nebraska Cattlemen member.

"This is an infestation, not a disease. So it can be treated and not have any bearing on the product.” Nebraska Cattlemen President Craig Uden is warning Nebraska producers about the New World Screwworm threat, but said the beef supply is safe. nebraskapublicmedia.org/en/n…

Fascinating article!!
The highest-paid employee at a Nebraska nonprofit wasn’t the head of the state’s largest hospital or the Creighton men’s basketball coach. It was a doctor in Norfolk. Read more 🔗 buff.ly/ye9rqCz

In response the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) confirmation of a New World Screwworm (NWS) case in Texas, Nebraska Cattlemen (NC) released the following statement: “Nebraska Cattlemen, the NC Animal Disease Threats Working Group, and the NC Animal Health and Nutrition Committee have been preparing for New World Screwworm almost two years. Although the only confirmed case in the U.S. at this time is in Texas, Nebraska producers should remain vigilant and report any cases immediately, as early detection and treatment will be highly effective in eradicating NWS. We have eradicated this parasite before and we will again.” If you suspect a case of NWS, immediately notify your local veterinarian, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture at 402-471-2351, or the local USDA office at 402-434-2300. To learn more, visit screwworm.gov.

Yes, we knew this was going to happen. Too many didnt take the threat seriously enough…soon enough. Now, we focus on the consumers that do not understand what is happening. Maybe the industry could come together over this one…might mean some will have to get the chip off their shoulder

Around 500 pounds of beef this morning heading to three different airports. I will swear by air cargo shipping, especially when you have as great as crew as the Denver @SouthwestAir office! And even remembered to leave beef sticks!

I rarely see posts about the ‘bottom end.’ We always seem to tout the 1%’ers-the highest selling, the best performance, the outlier. It takes alot to raise good cattle… Someone asks what my goals are for our cowherd-uniformity is always #1. I’m getting better at my decision making, but there is always room for improvement. I’m proud of this group of steers-this is the bottom end, no dinks, no misfits (though there is one lovely set of horns thats in this group) that were held back-this is it. They’ve been on a 2lb growing ration and are headed to Sheridan Livestock Wednesday. I know they’ll feed. I know they’ll grade. But for a bottom end-they’ll even look good doing it:) 33 head May/June averaging around 650-700
