While Pride is an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate, it is also important that Pride remains a vehicle for necessary change. It is not about corporations or parties. Pride is, at its core, about community.

It should not be controversial for the queer community to show solidarity with a people who are being actively and indiscriminately exterminated. Fierté Fredericton Pride’s solidarity with Palestine should come as a surprise to no one.

The 2SLGBTQIA community faces persecution everywhere. In Israel. In so-called Canada. There is no such thing as a truly safe space for us, not yet. Palestinian liberation opens up the doors to queer Palestinian liberation.
ALT The weekly rallies held by Fredericton Palestine Solidarity are always peaceful. Many queer people and Jewish people participate in them. Advocating for a ceasefire and for a free Palestine is not antisemitism.
ALT The backlash we have received for our Grand Marshal announcement and our solidarity against genocide has been homophobic, racist, and religiously-intolerant. Characterizing Palestinians as terrorists is racist and irresponsible. That kind of rhetoric puts Palestinian lives in danger, not just in Gaza, but around the globe.
ALT Fierté Fredericton Pride has always welcomed Jewish people to participate in our festival and parade. Claims that Fierté Fredericton Pride’s solidarity with Palestine is antisemitic are false and grossly misrepresent our organization. We do not tolerate antisemitism, Islamophobia, religious-intolerance, or racism of any kind, including anti-Palestinian racism.
ALT There has been no impact to our festival lineup as a result of our stance. We appreciate the continued support and allyship from our community, partners, and sponsors. Fierté Fredericton Pride reaffirms our support of Fredericton Palestine Solidarity and its workWe stand by our decisions in regard to sponsors and parade participants. Fierté Fredericton Pride represents not only the 2SLGBTQIA community, but its intersections, and we take that responsibility seriously.
