What is MSL? Have you ever bought a bag of potato chips, opened it, didn’t finish eating them, and found them soft and soggy the next day, completely losing their crunch? Chips are actually the same they’re very afraid of “getting damp. In the electronic components industry, there is a professional term called MSL (Moisture Sensitivity Level). It’s like giving every chip its own “moisture phobia certificate.” There are six levels from MSL 1 to MSL 6: •MSL 1: Most resistant to moisture you can leave it out for a whole year with no problem (the toughest one). •MSL 3: The most common level. Once the package is opened, it must be soldered within 168 hours (7 days). •MSL 5/6: Extremely sensitive to moisture. After opening, it can only be left out for a very short time and must be used immediately. Otherwise it needs to go into the baking oven for emergency “rescue.” If you don’t follow the time and temperature requirements specified by MSL, once the chip has absorbed too much moisture, during high-temperature reflow soldering it will behave like an egg in the microwave the internal steam expands rapidly and causes it to burst or crack. This is commonly known as the popcorn effect
