On Monday I exited my #phd viva with only typos (typos! *shakes fist*) to correct. 'Relief' doesn't cover it!
HUGE thanks to examiners @IanRHartley@jon_seabirds, supervisor @SamCPatrick and friends and family for everything in the last 4 1/2 years.

Last talk of #ASABSpring2024 by @FR_McCully on coordinated parental care, where costs of parental care are more evenly distributed. She looked at how black-legged kittwakes coordinated care in the short- and long-term at “The Arctic’s creepiest soviet ghost town.”

Thanks so much to @r_heisman from @hakaimagazine for featuring our work on personality, breeding success and re-pairing in kittiwakes in this recent article!

Excited to see our new paper, led by myself and @luciamartinaml, published in @PNASNews! We look at movement trajectories of wandering #albatross and find they orient towards to v low frequency 'infrasound' 1/n
3/4 Kittiwakes mated according to personality at one colony but not the other 🤔
In both colonies, similar partners had better breeding success. Chick survival made re-pairing less likely ➡️
An INDIRECT effect of personality on re-pairing in a long-lived, monogamous bird!
ALT A line graph showing the relationship between the probability of breeding failure and the similarity of personalities with pairs. The line from the model slopes down from the left to the right of the graph. There are dark points representing breeding attempts which demonstrate success or failure. Grey shading represents the confidence intervals. As the similarity between pairs decreases, there are more points associated with failure than when similarity is high.
4/4 Similar pairs may find it easier to cooperate during #parentalcare.
But #matechoice is complicated and is certainly influenced by more than just #personality…
Not all that different from humans, in my opinion!
