🚨 FRIDAY 6/12 @ 1 PM: LA City Council's Rules Committee meets one last time on Charter reform — just as the Chief Legislative Analyst says “further study is required” for major reforms.
Tell Council: no more “study,” & no more stalling!
Meeting info at: bit.ly/FRLA26
While @cd4losangeles made one last attempt to bring up the Commission recommendation to lower the number of signatures required to run for office from 500 to 350, no other members of the Rules Committee were in support.
A Charter change to increase penalties for ethics violations has also been moved forward (CRC 32), although CM John Lee has requested the Council not move forward with the prohibition on using campaign funds to pay penalties.
There is a full house today with more than a 100 people signed up to speak at the charter reform hearing.
CM Eunisses Hernandez, who is pressing for police reforms, and Tim McOsker are here to present comments to their colleagues.
Controller and progressive groups rally around police accountability and council expansion, CM Jurado speaks up for unhoused voters, and reactions to HUD pulling funds for homeless services, and more.

“Further study is required” on council expansion is ridiculous. The council wouldn’t actually expand until 2032 anyway, there’s plenty of time to figure out the logistics. Put it on the ballot this year!
Los Angeles is the second most populous city in the United States, yet has 15 council members. New York City has 51, and Chicago has 50. Furthermore, Los Angeles must switch its voting system from the Louisiana jungle primary to ranked-choice voting. 🧵👇🏿
