The Health Policy Commission (HPC) report found that just over 19% of commercially insured members filled at least one antidepressant prescription, with “adult females using these drugs at twice the rate of males." Female patients posted the highest behavioral health drug usage in 2019, and certain age cohorts logged the largest increases in 2024. The HPC said 26.9% of females ages 18 to 25 had a prescription in 2019, which grew to 34.3% in 2024. For females ages 26 to 49, 31.2% had a prescription in 2019, compared to 38.4% in 2024. In 2024, the HPC said 19.3% of males ages 18 to 25 and 22.4% of males ages 26 to 49 had a behavioral health prescription.

Early Thursday morning, a Subaru carrying two young women crashed through a guardrail on Lakeview Avenue and tumbled roughly 25 feet into the shallow waters of Beaver Brook, prompting a swift multi-agency response that ended with both occupants safely rescued and treated for minor injuries. The incident was reported around 2:10 a.m. on June 11 near Primrose Hill Road. The driver, a 24-year-old Lowell, Massachusetts resident, and her 24-year-old passenger from Newburyport were able to exit the partially submerged vehicle, which came to rest upright in the brook. However, the steep embankment prevented them from climbing back to the roadway on their own. Dracut firefighters from the Swift Water Rescue Team, including members Derek Santos and Chris Gagne, entered the water wearing protective gear to secure the scene and assist with the operation. Using ropes, rescuers helped hoist both women back up to street level. They received on-scene treatment before being transported by Pridestar Trinity EMS to Lowell General Hospital. Authorities have not released the women’s names. Beaver Brook runs through parts of Dracut and neighboring areas, and the embankment at this location features a significant drop that made the rescue particularly challenging.

The state Appeals Court affirmed the conviction of a man today who was sentenced in October of 2025 to serve 10-12 years in state prison for the rape of an underage girl at a migrant shelter in Rockland, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced. 28-year-old Cory Alvarez was found guilty of one count of Aggravated Rape of a Child with 10 Year Age Difference on September 12, 2025, after an eight-day trial in Plymouth Superior Court. In an unpublished decision, the Appeals Court ruled that the Commonwealth met its evidentiary burden, various evidentiary rulings by the trial judge were correct, and the prosecutor’s closing argument was proper. At approximately 7:00 p.m. on March 13, 2024, Rockland Police were dispatched to the Comfort Inn at 850 Hingham Street for a report of a sexual assault. At the time, the Comfort Inn was part of a state/federal program to provide housing and food for migrant families staying there. Alvarez resided at that address. Upon arrival, Rockland Police encountered the 15-year-old female victim, who was then transported to South Shore Hospital for treatment. As a result of their investigation, Rockland Police developed probable cause to arrest Alvarez, and he was taken into custody. At trial, jurors heard testimony that Alvarez’s DNA was located on the female victim.
