Now that the dust has settled and the summer transfer window has come to a close, as much as I hate to say it as they do a great job writing for the club as a whole, it’s time for a conversation about the journalists who cover Leeds United.
Whether it was Georginio Rutter’s £40 million departure to Brighton, or the purchase of Alex Cairns from Salford, just one transfer at Leeds was first revealed by a journalist who specialises in reporting on Leeds United in the mainstream media this summer (Charlie Cresswell’s departure to Toulouse, first reported by Adam Pope).
In total there were 23 transfers at Leeds this transfer window (8 arrivals and 15 departures), 22 of which were first reported by a journalist/outlet who doesn’t specify on Leeds, with our local journalists failing to report first on more than one outgoing transfer this summer (other than Cresswell’s) or link a single player who signed at the club prior to any links from elsewhere.
Obviously, there is a huge amount more to journalism than simply scooping transfer exclusives, and that if anything this is just a small fraction of the role as a reporter, but it seems that the transfer information was at an all time low from Leeds’ journalists this summer.
This isn’t an intended dig at them at all, as the journalists at Leeds do a great job, however just an observation on the reporting at the club over the past two months and how it has seemingly changed.
