Crazy to think it's 20 years in June since I started Fat As Funk Mastering - A lifetime ago. Been mixing & mastering full-time ever since. Many loyal industry clients who have used me for years meaning I could focus on providing quality work rather than being an "influencer".

Mastering a massive 45 track game soundtrack compilation for Vinyl. Mixture of score & licensed tracks ranging from orchestral, sound design, trap, rock, pop & funk. All have to sound appropriate together, have any problems fixed transparently & cut great on wax. Light work.

One of my mastering specialities is soundtracks on vinyl. These are some of the video game OST releases I've mastered recently. I love this work because it is challenging (a lot of tracks that are "unsuitable" for vinyl I can fix & I hear all kinds of cool music!

A recent vinyl remastering job. The excellent "the sky is too high" by Graham Coxon.
“I played the songs for him, and he said, ‘No… I don’t think we can use any of that.’ I was like, ‘Right. Cheers’”: Damon Albarn rejected an entire album of Blur songs – and accidentally kickstarted guitarist Graham Coxon’s solo career guitarworld.com/artists/guit…

How I like to set up a mix session: Name every channel simply. Group everything, & colour code the groups (ocd? Hmmm). Start at the bottom & work up (bass & kick balance, other drums, then work up in order of instrument importance). I like to leave the vocals to last, as...

.... make any last-minute mix tweaks on refreshed ears. Check everything against similar tracks by ear (MUCH better than AI comparison tools which don't feel the subtleties). Record through the hardware. Finalise with digital tools to set the final technicals (levels etc.)

Unless you are going for an especially intimate vocal sound, always take the time to remove the breaths. It makes vocals sound more professional. Either manually or with a gate (watch you don't accidentally silence some important bits though). Doesn't take long & is worthwhile

As an analogue hardware addict I like to switch things up every so often. One thing I am certain I'll keep for many many years is my lovely @spltweets Passeq. It really does sound amaaaaazing😍🔊

If you have ever landed a sync deal, you are an elite musician. I was at a sync panel in LA where several top music supervisors were joking saying "it's amazing anything ever lands, ever"...

Like many people I am in two minds about this. Can see the huge potential in so many ways but also see the theft of more human opportunities & a deeper threat to the voice over industry. Strange times we live in.

... We can even transform old masters you like the sound of into perfect vinyl-ready versions that sounds pretty-much the same. Much more transparently than other methods... This is why we have been the "in house" engineer for major vinyl pressing companies for over 10 years.
