The reported conditions facing Reza Valizadeh are deeply alarming. Wrongfully detained for his journalism with @RFERL, he has reportedly been denied adequate medical care while imprisoned in Iran. Freedom House calls for his immediate release and for Iranian authorities to uphold their obligations to protect the health and rights of those in their custody. #FreeRezaValizadeh #FreeThemAll

Iranian-American journalist Reza Valizadeh has been jailed by Iran for his work since September 2024. He is serving 10 years in prison and has reported physical and psychological abuse as well as being denied critical medical care inside Tehran’s Evin Prison. The U.S. government must intensify diplomatic efforts to secure Valizadeh’s release, who has been designated as wrongfully detained by the U.S. State Department. The U.S. must also press Iran for transparency and accountability regarding Valizadeh’s reports of mistreatment and his need to access urgent medical care. cpj.org/2026/06/cpj-alarmed-… @kwelkernbc @freerezav #FreeReza

The Foley Foundation is grateful for the continued attention from the press on Americans unjustly held abroad. In an exchange with Kristen Welker of Meet the Press, the President expressed uncertainty as to whether Americans are being held by the Iranian regime. Extensive public reporting indicates that multiple Americans are unjustly held in Iran, including Reza Valizadeh and Kamran Hekmati—both formally designated by the administration as wrongfully detained—along with at least three additional cases we are tracking. Some outlets have reported as many as six in total. We have shared the details of the cases we know directly with @StateDept and @NSC. The administration has rightly designated Iran as a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention, reflecting its long-standing pattern of hostage-taking of Americans. This designation applies when Americans are actively held by foreign governments. Amid renewed tensions and ceasefire violations, however, these cases risk being overshadowed. For families, every public signal matters—and many are understandably concerned. We respectfully urge sustained action to secure the release of all Americans held in Iran. Their loved ones are counting on continued U.S. leadership to bring them home. #BringThemHome #WrongfulDetention #HostageDiplomacy #Iran @BOFHcampaign @SecRubio @StateSPEHA @SebGorka nbcnews.com/politics/donald-…

As Iran partially lifted its nationwide internet blackout, CBS News' @MargBrennan heard an American journalist's plea for help. Iranian-American journalist Reza Valizadeh, who the U.S. says is wrongfully detained inside a notorious prison, is one of six Americans being held by Iran.

Religious freedom is a fundamental human right. Everywhere and always.
Freedom House welcomes President Trump’s commitment to raise the detention of Pastor Ezra Jin Mingri with President Xi during their upcoming meeting in Beijing. The Fred Hiatt Program to Free Political Prisoners recently adopted Pastor Jin’s case and we will continue fighting for his release until he is reunited with his family. #FreeThemAll

Reza Valizadeh is a former @RFERL journalist and U.S. citizen who has been wrongfully detained by the Iranian regime since September 2024. Since his arrest, Reza has faced increasingly brutal conditions and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on false charges in December 2024. Reza’s lawyer, @FayheeRyan, describes the urgency of Reza’s wrongful detention: “World Press Freedom Day reminds us that journalism is not a crime—and neither is telling the truth. Reza Valizadeh’s wrongful detention is part of a broader effort to silence independent voices, and it underscores why defending press freedom is inseparable from defending fundamental human rights. Reza’s continued detention serves no legitimate purpose. His release is an easy, humanitarian step on which the United States and Iran should be able to agree—and doing so could help open space for addressing the far more difficult issues now fueling broader conflict.” #FreeReza @freerezav

Two Americans held captive in Iran, Reza Valizadeh and Kamran Hekmati, have been designated by the U.S. government as wrongfully detained, which the sister of an ex-Iran prisoner Neda Sharghi said “is very important.” “Because you publicly now recognize these individuals as being used for their blue [U.S.] passport, and the United States government now has the sort of carte blanche to use all its resources to get them out,” she said. “These two individuals, Reza’s and Kamran’s families, do want their cases to be public.”
