The Welch-funded project at @UTSAChemistry, led by PI Aimin Liu (@Dr_Feradical), has resulted in a new publication in the high-profile chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie. This work uncovers how the iron-containing oxindole-installation enzyme MarE shifts gears in oxygenation selectivity through structural and redox tuning, guiding distinct product outcomes from a shared substrate including the predominant dioxygenated product to the intended monooxygenated 2-oxindole scaffold for natural product biosynthesis. By revealing the true catalytic identity of MarE and delineating the roles of small-molecule effectors and loop architecture, this study advances mechanistic understanding and predictive capabilities within the oxygenase superfamily. doi.org/10.1002/anie.2025108…

The Liu lab Summer2024 pickleball competition was a great success. Our students need to work harder to improve their pickleball skills since @Dr_Feradical gave no quarter and decisively won! Can't let this happen again... @UTSAChemistry @UTSA @UTSASciences

ADO is pivotal in the regulation of oxygen sensing and thiol metabolism. We present evidence of a catalytic metal(3 )-bound superoxo intermediate, challenging the status quo of a high-valent ferryl intermediate in the thiol dioxygenase mechanism @J_A_C_S pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jac…

Rest in peace, Dr. Jarzecki
Very sad to learn that Prof. Andrzej A. Jarzecki @CCNYChem, our collaborator on catalase-peroxidase (i.e., KatG), passed away in an accident. He was a wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable, productive, proactive, and passionate colleague. May he rest in peace!
