GEO has its place, but within Googleâs ecosystem, optimizing for AI is really the natural evolution of SEO, not a replacement for it. Core fundamentals like crawlability, proper structure, genuinely helpful content, and strong entity clarity remain essential. Thatâs why GEO shines more for brand awareness in non-Google AI platforms and LLMs.
Iâm not against GEO, it brings unique advantages in content style, context, and depth. However, from Googleâs standpoint, theyâre essentially positioning AI optimization as just the next chapter of traditional SEO.
Technically theyâre right, but itâs also a convenient, self-serving perspective. Of course theyâd describe AI Overviews as simply another search feature rather than a fundamentally different product that reshapes the value of rankings.
For brands, the real question isnât what we call it. Itâs whether landing the top 10 organic position today actually delivers the same traffic and impact it did just 18 months ago.
