I lived this myself.
One day you’re in a professional environment where your kit is folded, breakfast and lunch are provided, and your daily routine is planned for you. The next, you’re released and left wondering what’s next.
Do I have a CV? How do I apply for jobs? What does a job interview even look like? How do I navigate life outside football?
Clubs invest heavily in coaching, facilities, performance staff, and player development and rightly so. But there also needs to be greater investment in what happens after a player is released.
For many young men, football has been their entire world. When that ends, the transition can be overwhelming. A stronger aftercare system, career guidance, education, and practical life support should be part of every club’s responsibility.
Developing players is important. Preparing people for life beyond the game is just as important.
