There is a lot of buzz around a particular fund and rightly so, as it is the largest active equity mutual fund in India. I am talking about #PPFAS Flexi Cap Fund. I generally do not comment on individual funds but since I have received so many DMs, I would like to share my thoughts as an investor and someone active in the mutual fund space. I have held this fund in my family portfolio since 2018 and it remains one of our largest holdings. I have invested through SIPs and lump sums since the beginning. The fund has done well. It benefited from meaningful US exposure when RBI limits were not breached and delivered strong performance with comparatively lower drawdowns and better downside protection. 🛑 Concerns 🔸 The continuously growing AUM is a concern. Many argue that AMC-level AUM is still manageable, but I believe fund-level AUM is the more relevant metric. For example, a 4% position in a ₹1.4 lakh crore fund translates to roughly ₹5,600 crore. That alone is larger than the entire AUM of their ELSS fund (around ₹5,540 crore). Managing a 2–4% allocation in a smaller fund and managing the same allocation in a massive flexi-cap fund are very different challenges. In my view, increasing AUM does reduce flexibility over time. 🔸 People also talk about the large cash holding, but that can be a feature rather than a bug. They have gradually deployed cash, and even the cash portion itself has generated 6–7% returns. So I do not see cash as a major concern. The fund manager will deploy capital when he believes the opportunity is right. 🔸 The cap on US exposure is another common concern. But that is a regulatory limitation. There is not much the fund can do about it. ✅ My approach Despite these concerns, I will continue to hold the fund, although I have reduced my SIP and further investments. It remains a core holding in the portfolio, and I largely treat it as a large-cap-oriented fund. I have also moderated my return expectations from the fund. To complement it, I have increased allocations to mid-cap and small-cap funds in my satellite portfolio, which I believe can generate the additional alpha. Heads I win, tails I don't lose. For new investors expecting the kind of returns the fund delivered in its earlier years, I think expectations should be moderated. Alternatively, one can explore other flexi-cap funds with smaller asset bases and greater flexibility. For existing investors, I believe the fund remains a solid hold, provided expectations are set appropriately. Not investment advice.
