Finland condemns the Russian drone attack hitting an apartment building in Romania. Russia is crossing another line in its war of aggression against Ukraine. Finland stands with its ally Romania and continues to support Ukraine to defend itself. The situation is being discussed within the Alliance.

Finland has today summoned Russia’s ambassador. We strongly condemn Russia’s illegal threats & brutal attacks against civilians in Ukraine and its intimidation campaign urging European countries’ embassy staff to leave Kyiv.  Russia will not dictate Europe’s presence in Ukraine.

In democratic elections, the Hungarian people have demonstrated their strong will to be an active member of European Union and NATO.

On International Roma Day we celebrate Roma culture and human rights. Finland’s National Roma Policy promotes equality, inclusion and participation, and counter discrimination by addressing antigypsyism. Finland continues to promote Roma people rights in international fora.

Finland, together with our close partners, today joined a joint statement regarding the situation in the Persian Gulf and, in particular, the Strait of Hormuz. The statement condemns Iran’s recent attacks on commercial vessels and attempts to disrupt commercial shipping. The statement also calls on all countries to respect international law and uphold the principles of international security. For Finland, security of supply is the cornerstone of national resilience. Finland has long relied on strong preparedness. Our society must function during disruptions — from geopolitical tensions and hybrid threats to supply chain shocks and energy crises. The Finnish Comprehensive Security model is unique. Its core is formed by close cooperation between the public sector, private companies, and citizens. The National Emergency Supply Agency is a key player in ensuring the security of supply in Finland. I visited one of their storage sites today.

Finland is the Happiest country in the World for the 9th year running. We also climbed up the world brand index from 7th to 5th. I am often asked why we do well in these rankings. I do not think there is a magic potion, but it helps to have a society which strives towards freedom, equality and justice. The basis of it all is a welfare society, a robust education system, a sense of security and a close attachment to nature. There is no such thing as a perfectly happy society, but providing some building blocks that give us a chance to live a meaningful life, to help others, will nudge us in the right direction during the journey of life.

On this International Day dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust, we pause to reflect, remember and honour the six million Jews, and the millions of others, murdered during humanity’s darkest chapter and gravest moral failing. As we look back, let us remain vigilant in recognising and addressing the threats of our time, and in upholding the lessons, institutions and democratic values that protect future generations from the horrors we remember today.
