Uptown Girl is from the album An Innocent Man (1983), an entire album that Billy Joel made as a tribute to the sounds of the 50s and 60s, doo-wop, soul and especially Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons (he even imitates their falsetto on the recording).
It was originally called "Uptown Girls" (plural) and began to be written in St. Barts when Billy was surrounded by supermodels: his girlfriend of the time, Elle Macpherson, Christie Brinkley and Whitney Houston. The lyrics were born inspired by Elle, but when he fell in love with Christie, the song turned on her and Christie ended up starring in the iconic video.
It reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #1 in the UK for 5 weeks, the only #1 of his career in the UK!
