I love this art therapy example (slide 2) because it beautifully illustrates how our inner child can communicate through art when we create a safe space for expression without judgment, analysis, or censorship.
Years ago, during an art therapy exercise, I painted this image without overthinking it. I simply let my inner child speak.
What I eventually noticed was striking.
The central figure in the painting isn't me.
I'm off to the side, barely visible, peeking in from the edge of the canvas. My entire attention is focused on him. He stands in the center, bathed in sunlight, while I watch with admiration. Even the words "I Love You" dominate the composition.
At first glance, it looks loving.
In reality, it revealed a pattern that had quietly shaped much of my life.
I had learned to center other people rather than myself.
I often placed men on a pedestal, making their needs, dreams, emotions, and approval more important than my own. My role became admirer, supporter, caretaker, cheerleader. I was present in the picture, but not truly at the center of my own life.
The painting wasn't showing me romance.
It was showing me imbalance.
That's one of the reasons I believe creative expression can be such a powerful healing tool. The inner child doesn't always speak through words. Sometimes she speaks through color, symbols, placement, and imagery.
Long before our conscious mind understands a pattern, the unconscious is often trying to show us.
"The patterns we can't see are often the ones shaping our lives the most."
We can mature in years and still carry childhood strategies into adulthood. We can become successful, spiritual, educated, and self-aware, yet still be operating from old survival patterns formed decades earlier.
The goal isn't to judge those younger parts of ourselves.
The goal is to listen.
To create a safe space where they can finally speak.
