As someone nearby the Hunt and Kerrville area (20 miles away or so); let me give some info that might be helpful as we all process our grief and ask all the (understandable) questions. 1) This area of Texas is known as the 'flash flood capital' storms 1/10 the size of the one that impacted us over the 4th of July weekend trigger these alerts. As there are MANY hills and gullies and we have a limestone base soil...so water tends to flow to tributaries and rivers much more efficiently. For better or worse. 2) The area that Camp Mystic is at hosts tens of other camps. It is well known for historic camps; that ALL (I guarantee it) have standard flood procedures...including going to higher ground. Which is reasonable and I would assume was followed. 3) This area is also well known to have spotty cell phone service at best; so even alerts going out at 1:30AM -3AM could have not gotten received. We also must keep in mind that; by the time these more serious alerts got to those impacted; waters were likely already surging (specifically in the area where Camp Mystic meets up at the 2 forks that feed the headwaters of the Guadalupe). 4) Nobody could have been prepared for the rate and speed which the river increased in depth. Going from 3' to 29 ' in a matter of 45 minutes is an INSANE level of flooding. I do have more to say.
