It’s not a Philly issue. It’s a public education funding issue… and until City Council admits that… we as not gonna get anywhere.

Can we do an inventory on who in council has kids and where they send them? It’s been published many times for BOE members … what about council? How many in public? Private? Where? Currently or in recent past.
City Council just introduced a resolution honoring Russell Byers Charter School for "25 years of educational excellence." 9% of students are proficient at math and 26% are proficient at reading.

Closures across the state…. this is not a Philly crisis… it’s a state crisis. City council, advocates, etc need to learn who their real audience should be…. Hint: not a group of volunteers w no power to raise $ for schools

Finally some accountability in this town. BOE are the adults in the room willing to hold people accountable… something Philly isn’t used to.

So are they supposed to have no conditions? Can just do whatever they want? They’re a private school then ? Remember- when charters serve kids and show good outcomes, they are often granted their expansion requests (see Keystone).
The Philly School District illegally imposes conditions on charters, a group representing 70 of them says in lawsuit ebx.sh/jKeViR

An elected board is a bad idea for so many reasons- like special interests buying seats and also distracting board members from the work bc they have to go campaign and play favors to keep their seats….. But you do know why we don’t have an elected school board for real, right?

and the only board at the beck and call of city council for funding and “permission.” Maybe an elected board IS what we need…. finally be truly independent from council. 🤔 But do we really think council would give up that power!?

Populations of the 17 proposed school closures. 5 of them w less than 200 kids. 8 with between 2-300. THE MATH DOESNT MATH! Simply blocking a plan to play hard ball- a plan that’s been in development for YEARS & that wasn’t a secret- is not how we make progress for kids. #phled

This is egregious and inexcusable. The disrespect teachers and staff expressing is valid. A new payroll system is no excuse for delay. #phled @PHLschools
