ALT Did you know? AI-powered MRI technology can now help distinguish Parkinson’s disease from similar neurological disorders with over 93% accuracy in some cases.
ALT Did you know? Researchers are using smartwatches and wearable sensors to detect subtle movement changes linked to Parkinson’s disease, sometimes before symptoms become obvious.
ALT Did you know? Scientists now believe Parkinson’s disease is not one single disease, but multiple biological subtypes that may progress differently from person to person.

At the Fixel Institute, education and mentorship help shape the future of neuroscience.
ALT Medical student Chase Comprosky shares gratitude for mentorship in brain stimulation research using machine learning at a symposium. “I’m incredibly grateful for the mentorship and support I’ve received through my research at the Fixel Institute, especially from Drs. Joshua Wong and Jackson Cagle. This experience has further strengthened my interest in integrating medicine, technology, and neuroscience research to advance our understanding and treatment of neurological
disease.”

New research from Fixel @UFHealth and international collaborators found long-term exposure to air pollution may increase the risk of dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s disease dementia. The study was published in @JAMANetworkOpen. Read more here➡️ow.ly/yI2C50Z15Pr
ALT Drs. Davydow and Pontone stand outside of the Fixel Institute clinic. Text overlay states "JAMA Network Open""Exposure to air pollutants and lewy body dementias: a nationwide case-control study."
ALT Air pollution may influence brain health long before symptoms appear. Researchers examined how long term exposure to fine particulate matter and other pollutants was associates with Parkinson's disease dementia and Lewy body dementia. The findings add to growing evidence connecting environmental exposures and neurological disease.
ALT What did researchers find? Higher air pollution exposure was associated with increased risk of Parkinson's-related dementias. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) showed some of the strongest associations. Results support the need for continued research into environmental contributors to neurodegenerative disease.
ALT Why this matters. Understanding environmental risk factors may help researchers better identify, prevent and treat neurological diseases in the future. These findings also highlight the importance of public health efforts aimed at improving air quality and reducing harmful exposures.
