The NITA Bill is still a draft. It has not passed Parliament. That means there is still time. But if it passes as written, it will be one of the most damaging things Ghana has done to its own tech sector. Here is why this is personal for me:

At the launch of the Bicycle Education Empowerment Programme (BEEP) a public-private partnership investing in both human capital and domestic production. By locally assembling 20,000 bicycles annually through TVET hubs, the BEEP program will slash commute times for rural students, many of whom walk over 5km daily by 75%. Beyond keeping students especially girls in school this initiative also reduces Ghana’s reliance on 700,000 annual bike imports by equipping a TVET workforce with high-demand manufacturing and assembly skills. From healthcare delivery to logistics, the use cases for these bikes are endless. Last Friday, Pres John Mahama launched Ghana’s National AI Strategy, establishing the roadmap and guardrails for the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Having personally worked on Ghana’s Open Data and Open Governance policies years ago, it is incredibly rewarding to see those principles serving as the foundation for this era of innovation. If AI is the engine, structured data is the fuel. With this strategy, Ghana is positioning itself as a beacon for responsible AI adoption and development, backed by an initial government commitment of $270m. The roadmap aims to among other things expand education, empower youth for future jobs, deepen digital infrastructure, and accelerate adoption in key sectors such as Healthcare, Agriculture, Energy, and Finance.
