On the opening day of the World Cup, we lost a world champion: centre-back Brito. His spell at Flamengo was brief and hampered by the Seleção’s long preparation for the 1970 World Cup. But he was a Flamengo player in the Brazilian triumph in Mexico. Rest in peace! 🙏🏼😢

Our World Cup winner Moacyr turns 90 today! Brought up in Flamengo, he was a lightweight playmaker with outstanding skills and remarkable vision. Moacyr played for the first team from 1956 to 1961 and was part of Brazil’s 1958 World Cup winning squad. Happy birthday, legend!

Flamengo won the Brasileirão title #OTD in 1982 with a 1-0 away win over Grêmio. Nunes scored the only goal with a brilliant pass by Zico. The whole build-up to the goal illustrates perfectly the difference in style of play of both teams.

Today our world champion Andrade celebrates his 69th birthday! Calm and elegant defensive midfielder with superb passing, clean tackling and very good reading of the game. But his secret weapon were the shots from outside the box. Also managed Fla to a Brasileirão title in 2009.

Flamengo is not only a football club. And it’s great because that’s why we can proudly say such a worldwide acclaimed genius like Oscar Schmidt played (and won trophies) for our basketball team. Rest in peace, Holy Hand! ❤️🖤🕊️

There was great anticipation of a showdown at the Maracanã #OTD in 1983: Zico's Flamengo v Sócrates' Corinthians. In the end, it turned out to be a one-sided affair: Flamengo won 5-1, despite having THREE other good goals ruled out. Zico (twice), Mozer, Élder and Adílio scored.

Flamengo grabbed a comfortable 5-0 victory over Hungarian giants Ferencváros (then called Kinizsi) in Budapest #OTD in 1954. The match took place during the Rubro-Negros' European spring trip. This rare footage shows part of the action.

Remembering midfielder Geraldo on what would have been his 72nd birthday. A luxury playmaker who came along with Zico in Flamengo's youth ranks. Elegant, silky, always walking tall. Passed away shockingly at the very young age of 22. His memory lives on. ❤️🖤 🕊️

Canal 100 was a hugely popular newsreel shown in Brazilian cinemas from the 60's to mid-80's with a TV revival in mid-90's. Here's the footage of Flamengo 2-1 derby win over Vasco #OTD in 1979. A remarkable goal by Zico after a great cross by Toninho and a few pinpoint headers.

#OTD in 1982, Zico scored a hat-trick - header, long shot, penalty - as Flamengo beat Guarani 3-2 away in the return match of Brasileirão semifinals. Fla went through to the final with a 5-3 aggregate win. "Whoever has Zico has everything", said commentator Galvão Bueno.

#OTD in 1980, Flamengo smashed Palmeiras 6-2 in the Brasileirão. Zico scored a marvellous free-kick, as usual, but right-back Toninho also hit a cracker in the 4th goal. We were on our way to the title!

The first ever 'Seleção', back in 1914, had a back pairing from Flamengo: Píndaro (standing, left) and Nery (standing, right) played in the 2-0 win over Exeter City, in July, and in the 1-0 triumph over Argentina in Buenos Aires that won the Copa Roca for Brazil in September.

#OTD in 1979, Zico, Carpegiani and the late Luisinho "das Arábias" scored in the first half to give Flamengo a 3-0 derby win over Botafogo. Easy, easy.
