He started convinced the Earth was flat, used an extremely low viewpoint, and didn’t control for boat height or conditions. 3) It didn’t hold up in repeat tests. Better-controlled experiments (like Wallace in 1870) clearly showed the expected curvature once refraction was accounted for. Classic confirmation bias. One shady canal sighting isn’t proof of anything. Overall result : Fail.
