To put this in perspective:
The UK just surpassed Russia as the worlds thirs largest spender on nuclear weapons.
Around 25% of the UK's national defence budget will go into the nuclear weapons programme.

Spending that much money on nukes is insane, esp for @NATO states. US, UK and France outspend Russia 10 times, and yet there is no sense of being secure from Russian nuclear blackmail at all in Europe. Nuclear Weapons are an outdated, expensive and ineffective security strategy.

Long nonsense sentences are not unusual. Neither is the lack of anything tangible in the latest draft of the #NPTRevCon outcome document. If states were waiting for a point where an outcome would be bad enough to be worse than no outcome at all, I think now is the time.

Credit to the #NPT negotiators, but this document...para 4 (risk reduction) alone gives me a headache. A 157-word run-on sentence that says "we should reduce nuclear risks" and includes both "measures to build confidence" and "confidence-building measures." 1/3

Is it maybe just an outrageous attempt to negotiate even more behind closed doors? I could think of 5 or so countries which wouldnt want to face public scrutiny of their positions. #NPTRevCon

On the margins of the #NPT Review Conference, 🇮🇪 & 🇳🇿 co-hosted an event with members of the @UN Independent Panel on Nuclear War Effects and Scientific Research.
At a time of heightened nuclear risks, the urgent work of tackling the catastrophic effects of nuclear war must be based on the latest science. 🔬☢️
We look forward to seeing the Panel’s work develop over the coming 18 months.
