New research, in partnership with @EdinburghNapier, suggests that European silver fir, Pacific silver fir, and Serbian spruce could be blended into the British spruce C16 market, offering promising alternatives for future timber production.
These species demonstrated strong potential in meeting C16 strength class requirements, supporting efforts to diversify species in British forests.

I read up a little on the "Sexy Handaxe
Theory" thing and honestly surprised that it would seem weird to anyone that there would be a lot of unnecessarily nice axes that seem barely used.
Often labelled as a multi-function tool for cutting, digging, smashing bones or even displays of sexual prowess; its likely handaxes were primarily used as butchery tools, working like a bread knife, with a sawing action.

Great to see innovative use of timber in a university teaching/learning environment, in “the egg” iconic Lindsay Stewart Lecture Theatre, @EdinburghNapier for #WSE2024 hosted via @FlyingQuercus & colleagues.
We're hosting the WSE2024 conference. For this, my colleague Marlene Cramer has made an excellent audio walking guide so you can have a technical tour at your convenience even if not attending the conference. Big thanks to Marlene & all who contributed.

A consultation on "Invest 2035: the UK’s modern industrial strategy" is open and I cannot help but notice art in this figure. (Also the spelling of advanatge but we've all been there). Bit concerning that the Net Zero stuff is only about energy though.

What are the big and upcoming issues for the UK forestry sector? 🌳🛰️🦠🌡️
Ecosystem collapse, droughts, eDNA and smart silviculture were a few key themes reported in Tew et al.’s (@ForestryEngland) horizon scan of issues affecting UK forest management.

Passing on info - Historic Environment Scotland & Historic England are seeking case studies related to timber; external lime; ferrous metal
This link goes to a pdf with info & link to a form
historicengland.org.uk/conte…
ALT Quoting the pdf:
"We are interested in case studies located in any part of England or Scotland, including successful examples as well as cases of failure, and related to:
Timber: hardwood or softwood external joinery, cladding and timber framing treated with oil, tar, varnish, paint or limewash
External lime plaster: traditional lime-based substrates painted with
limewash (including those with additives such as linseed oil or tallow), mineral paint or modern paints
Ferrous metal substrates such as architectural structures (for example bridges) or features (for example window frames, gates and railings)
For each substrate, we will select a few case studies and arrange in situ testing using non-destructive techniques or sampling in inconspicuous areas. As the pilot progresses, we will share findings with participants. We will also consider entering into collaborative research partnerships as the research develops and, for suitable cases, we will offer site trials and monitoring"
In October we're hosting a conference that will be attended by 120 wood scientists from Northern Europe & beyond. If you are on the hunt for expertise or freshly graduated PhDs to employ maybe you would like to attend too. We are also seeking sponsors.
