When the disciples questioned Jesus’ teaching on marriage, His response was unexpected. In Matthew 19:10–12, He explained that singleness isn’t for everyone — but for those who are able to receive it, it can be embraced “for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.” He even presents it as something given — a gift for some.
In other words, Jesus did not treat singleness as second best. He acknowledged that, for certain people, remaining unmarried can provide unique freedom and focus in serving God.
At Focus on the Family, we believe marriage is a beautiful gift from God and a covenant to be honored and desired. But we also affirm what Jesus affirmed: both marriage and singleness can be blessings.
Your value is not determined by a wedding ring. Whether married or single, God’s calling on your life is meaningful — and His design for each season is good.
