This guy might be special.
After working in the industry for a bit I've learned that there's basically two kinds of shooters.
Competition and practical.
Competition shooters will do insane and wacky things to their setups to get a but less take up on triggers, they'll add complex pneumatics to their buffers to mitigate a minute amount of recoil, they'll use peripherals that look insane to use like extended charge handles on Glocks.
Comp guys will sink $1000 into parts and custom tune their setup.
Anything to get a competitive edge.
In their defense, their setups, when working properly, do shoot very flat and allow you to perform 3-gun activities more effectively.
It's easy to call them richboys obsessed with winning but that isn't fair at all. Competitive shooters get their jollies from the events themselves. Their interests more align with the event and competing. And that's fine!
Comp shooters are like car guys who get really into autocross or rallycross. Focused on the sport of tuning and maximizing their tool.
Practical shooters on the other hand want simplicity and consistency. They want something that works out of the box and doesn't require tuning. They need the confidence that their firearm is going to work at the range, in the field, or God forbid, the self defense scenario.
The practical shooter is willing to take the downsides such as heavier setups and higher felt recoil in return for more guaranteed consistency. They might invest in one or two upgrade parts but by and large they chase consistency and accuracy.
The practical shooter might perform in competitive matches but their mentality is still grounded in practical shooting. They might even do competitions as part of a greater training regime.
They focus mostly on improving their skills over their setups.
You can argue they do this because they're poor or they don't have a competitive spirit but I think they just carry different values.
Things do get dangerous when they intersect. Please don't do certain mods to your carry pistol/home defense rifle to avoid things like this. While it's cool to daily drive a suped out Golf GTI, sometimes it's better to take the Corolla.
Getting a DQ because of an ND is one thing, putting a hole in yourself or someone else by accident is another.
This isn't a dunk on anyone and I'm glad this guy is fine.
