If we want a justice system that holds people accountable and makes communities safer, we have to recognize rehabilitation. Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing empowers prosecutors to look past the sentence and examine the person and the work they’ve done to rehabilitate. Over 1,000 people now have the opportunity to be parents, caregivers, taxpayers, good neighbors, and so much more.

Our Director of Policy, Jeremy Haile (@texpat) spoke earlier this month at the @NCSLorg “Time Served” conference on a “Second Look Policies” panel. He discussed Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing, emphasizing how prosecutors engage victims with transparency and how implementation varies across states. Great insights from Sarah Anderson (R Street Institute) on survivor justice laws, Ryan King on DC's IRAA data, and the overall conversations on policies to safely reduce incarceration. #JusticeReform #SecondLook #Policy

Exciting news in Colorado. 🎉 The state has enacted legislation (SB26-115) for Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing, which means seven states now give prosecutors the authority to look back at past cases in the interest of justice. We’re grateful for the support for PIR by Colorado legislators who stood up for justice that is both firm and fair. We also recognize the extraordinary work of Spero Justice Center for its commitment to accountability and second chances. We take great pride in working with all stakeholders, both law enforcement and defense. We’re grateful to partner with Spero on this effort. For The People is proud to support a national, growing movement to safely reunite incarcerated people with their families.

“I knew that prosecutors and law enforcement wanted to be a part of solutions.” At last year’s CCJ Member Summit, @forthepplorg's @hillaryblout discussed how her group finds common ground to safely release people with unduly long sentences.

What is prosecutor initiated resentencing? And how would it make our criminal justice system more fair and efficient? 🤔

A sentence can be right for its time. But what about years later? Prosecutor initiated resentencing gives prosecutors a structured way to revisit old cases — without undoing responsibility 👇

Responsible, bipartisan, and pragmatic advocacy is essential to improving how our criminal justice system actually works — moving beyond a one-size-fits-all reliance on arrest and incarceration toward approaches that deliver real safety and accountability.
