Well, my friend, let’s turn to the Word of God and talk straight about this.
You know, the Bible says, “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7) That’s as true as the law of gravity. If a man keeps on beating his wife and drowning himself in alcohol, he’s sowing to the flesh, and of the flesh he’ll reap corruption — in his home, in his body, and in his testimony. That’s not something to trifle with.
But listen carefully now, because here’s where a lot of folks get confused. Salvation is not based on what you do or don’t do. It never has been. Salvation is based on what Christ has done. He lived the perfect life you couldn’t live. He died on that cross for every sin you’ve ever committed or ever will commit. He rose again the third day, and He offers you forgiveness and eternal life as a free gift. You receive it by faith — simply trusting Him.
You can be the best church member in town, feed the poor, pray every day, and still not be good enough to earn heaven. On the other hand, no matter how deep in the mud a man has gone — even with wife-beating and drunkenness staining his record — the blood of Jesus Christ can still cleanse him the moment he comes to Christ in genuine faith.
But — and this is a big “but” — if a man says, “I’ve accepted Jesus,” and then keeps right on beating his wife and living like the devil, the Bible has a serious question for him: Is that real faith?
The Lord Jesus said, “By their fruits ye shall know them.” (Matthew 7:20) Real faith doesn’t just make a profession; it produces a new heart and a new direction. The Holy Spirit comes in and begins to work in that man. He convicts him. He gives him a hatred for the sin that once held him. He gives strength to love his wife as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25). He gives power to put away the bottle.
Now, does that mean the saved man becomes sinless overnight? No. He’ll still stumble. But there’s a difference between stumbling and wallowing. A true child of God may fall into sin, but he won’t wallow in it comfortably. The Spirit won’t let him. He’ll be miserable until he confesses it and turns from it.
So to the man in that question: If you’re beating your wife and enslaved to alcohol while claiming to be a Christian, you need to get on your knees today. Confess your sin. Trust Christ fully. And let the Holy Spirit begin the work of sanctification in your life. Salvation is by grace through faith — but genuine faith never leaves a man the way it found him.
My friend, if you’re listening and that’s you, the Lord is ready to forgive and ready to change you. Come to Him just as you are. He’ll do the rest.
That’s the glorious Gospel. Not what I do, but what He did. Yet true faith always shows up in the way we live. God bless you. Keep looking to Jesus.
