THE OLDEST FAMILY BUSINESS IN MANCHESTER WHERE ROCKSTARS AND FOOTBALLERS BUY THEIR PIANOS
The word ‘institution’ gets thrown around with wild abandon, but
@ForsythMusic is the real deal. Founded by brothers George and Henry Forsyth in 1857 - in collaboration with a certain Sir Charles Hallé - they can say with confidence they’re the oldest family business in the city. Siblings Emma and Simon Loat run the shop now, the fifth generation to do so.
Set across five sprawling floors, you can come in to buy anything from a plectrum to a grand piano. They’ve got one of the biggest selections of sheet music around, as well as a shiny collection of guitars and other string instruments. They’re well aware it’s an increasingly rare thing to encounter a place like this.
Where things get really interesting is on the piano floor - understandably, the rich and the famous come here to make outrageously expensive purchases. Meanwhile, down in the basement they have a collection of historically significant instruments dating back to the 1700s. Many of which have made their way onto all your favourite period dramas.
Even if you don’t play an instrument, they host loads of amazing events, like free-to-attend classical concerts. Next time you’re walking down Deansgate, why not pay them a visit? It’s a really special place.
