Fort Amherst is Britain’s most complete Napoleonic Fortress. An amazing network of underground passages, numerous original buildings and gun emplacements.
Work will be undertaken on 12th-15 April, & again on 17th-21st April some areas of Fort Amherst will be closed off to visitors for Health&Safety reasons. There may also be some occasional loud noises similar to gunshots heard on Saturday 15/04, apologises for any inconvenience

The 11th & 12th of March the Die Soldaten Living History Group and the Grenadier Regiment 916 of WW2 Living History Association, Portraying regular German Army infantry 1944-45. Gun firing will be taking place between 1pm and 3pm.

Fort Amherst will fire ‘gun shots’ to mark the two-minutes silence, which will be held during the funeral service for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Monday 19th September

On the occasion of the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Fort Amherst will remain closed on Monday 19th September.
The fort will reopen at 8am on Tuesday 20th September.
Did you know there are remote controlled gates located within the Fort Amherst tunnels from World War II?
The gates could be remotely open and closed so that the defenders were not exposed to enemy fire.
