Can we reach carbon neutrality *and* energy self-sufficiency in Europe? Not only we can, but there are also *hundreds* of ways to do so. Which ones? Check them out yourself at explore.callio.pe. All the details in the thread @bryn_pickering who led this massive study!

As promised, I'm back with more details! Check out our new @Joule_CP paper and accompanying interactive web tool to explore the diversity of options to reach climate neutrality in an energy self-sufficient Europe. 1/9 📖 doi.org/10.1016/j.joule.2022… 🔍 explore.callio.pe/

How many ways exist to design a given energy system in a carbon-neutral way? Does it make sense to look only at the ‘optimal’ solution, or are there many other feasible and economically comparable #alternatives? (1/5)

In a new study, we show MGA can be #customised to generate more or less diversity around design elements of interest. E.g., the spatial diversity of the deployed infrastructure or the mix of technologies in the system: doi.org/j457 (4/5)

This way, MGA can be tailored to a specific research question. Moreover, customisation enables #humansintheloop: starting from a first sample, stakeholders iteratively train the search for design options based on their preferences. Working on this now: flombardi.org/projects

Yet another media claims that PV panels production emits more CO2 than they can avoid (substituting fossil fuels) during their lifetime. Heard before? Well, this time, check out @martavictoria_p post, shedding light on how this is due to cherry-picking and outdated assumptions

A lot has been happening around our study since its publication last week (x.com/FrLomb/status/15363526…), and I think the fantastic outreach & dissemination by @tudelft is making a huge difference. Never been part of an institution so committed to energy transition research before!

“We found that the smart electrification of heat and mobility can reduce biofuel and storage needs in Europe. The ability to compare trade-offs between alternatives within one consistent analysis framework is a key strength of our new method.” tudelft.nl/en/2022/tu-delft/… #TUDelft180

It goes without saying that all of this was modelled based on an #opensource modelling framework: callio.pe, developed by @stefpf and @bryn_pickering. You can reproduce it all on your machine!

In other words, if true, 85% of the emission reductions until 2030 are non-CCUS measures! What are the measures behind that? ✅LC3 cements ✅use of recycled materials ✅3D concrete printing 5/9
