Let’s consider how the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework intersects with serving multilingual learners.
#UDL (CAST, 2016) is a powerful instructional framework commonly used in special education to design equitable learning environments for ALL learners.
3 core principles guide the planning process & lesson delivery:
1. ENGAGE
2. REPRESENT
3. EXPRESS
UDL can support & benefit MLs because it pushes us to become intentional about providing choice, connecting with students backgrounds and prior knowledge or experiences, forming goals, embedding multimodal forms of representation & increasing ways learners respond.
Let’s design instruction that is equitable & accessible to all learners.

On November 1, 1864, Maryland’s enslaved residents were declared free. Today, on Maryland Emancipation Day, we celebrate our commitment to freedom and acknowledge how far we have come as a state and nation as we recommit ourselves to the continuing fight for freedom.
When a child enters school, what is their street-level experience?
- What’s on the walls?
- How clean and organized is the space?
- Who greets you when you arrive?
- How are you greeted? (language, nonverbal cues, words)
- How clear is signage?
- Do you feel seen, loved, valued?
If you show frustration or anger through: sighing, giving the silent treatment, or making sarcastic comments—this is a passive aggressive communication style.
You might say “I’m fine” when asked if you’re upset.
Here’s why 🧵:
- 50% of my time is co-teaching
- 25% of my time is co-planning
-25% of my time is teaching my own classes
My priority in creating this schedule is CO-PLANNING as it has the greatest impact on all students.
It’s August which means Back to School! It also means it’s time to share my favorite article for new teachers once again. Always an important reminder for new teachers to “Find Their Marigolds,” and a reminder for veteran teachers to BE the marigolds, too. cultofpedagogy.com/marigolds…

All students, regardless of their current level of the English language, should be offered an ambitious curriculum and learn in purposeful, context rich situations.
