It is unacceptable that Yosvet de Jesús Lozada Rojas died on June 9 in State custody, a political prisoner held at El Rodeo III under critical health conditions, and who was repeatedly denied the humanitarian measure requested by his defense. We express our condolences to his family and call for a prompt, independent, and transparent investigation into what happened. We also demand the immediate release of all political prisoners and an end to political persecution in #Venezuela #FreeThemAll

Freedom House CEO @jamiemfly was pleased to meet with Ambassador Vladislav Kulminski of Moldova to discuss regional dynamics in Eastern Europe and the continued importance of supporting democratic resilience. At a time of shifting regional dynamics and growing challenges to authoritarian influence, democracies have an opportunity to deepen support for those working to advance freedom, human rights, and democratic governance. We stand with the people of Moldova in those efforts. @MoldovaEmbUS

Before Xi Jinping is welcomed to the United States, the Chinese government should immediately and unconditionally release Pastor Ezra Jin, Jimmy Lai, and other political prisoners in China and Hong Kong who are unjustly detained for peacefully exercising their fundamental rights. #FreeJimmyLai #FreePastorJin #FreeThemAll
Xi Jinping is set to visit President Trump in September, and the clock is ticking. @HudsonInstitute's @OliviaEnos and @michaelsobolik argue that @POTUS should demand the release of political prisoners, including #JimmyLai, as a precondition for that meeting. Congress has already voted unanimously to support the release of political prisoners in China. It's time for @POTUS to fulfill his promise: #FreeJimmyLai. washingtonexaminer.com/op-ed…

As Dr. Gulshan Abbas marks another birthday behind bars, Freedom House calls for her immediate and unconditional release and stands with all Uyghurs subjected to mass arbitrary detention, forced labor, and coercive population-control policies by the Chinese government. #FreeGulshanAbbas #FreeThemAll
Today, my sister, Dr. Gulshan Abbas, turns 64. This day should be a day of celebration — instead, today is a somber and grim day, where I am reminded that this is her 8th birthday unjustly imprisoned by the CCP. My sister is a retired medical doctor. She is a mother and a grandmother. She is not an activist, or a political person. She is not a criminal. Her only “crime” is her relation to me, an Uyghur American who exercised my freedom of speech by exposing China’s ongoing crimes against my people. She is one of the examples of thousands of innocent Uyghurs suffering under the CCP’s brutality. My sister should be free, spending her birthday with her loved ones. Instead, she spends it suffering, unjustly and arbitrarily detained. The CCP wants our silence and for us to believe that speaking out has consequences. However, I know that words have power. Today, I call on the international community, our allies and freedom to honor my sister on her birthday by using your social media to call for her release using #FreeGulshanAbbas. Raise her case, demand information on her condition, and call for her immediate and unconditional release.

Cuba’s humanitarian crisis continues to deepen. Across the island, people are peacefully protesting shortages of fuel, water, medicine, food, and other basic necessities. Their demands are not only for better living conditions, but for the right to speak out without fear. The rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression must be protected. Cubans exercising these fundamental rights should not face violence, repression, or political imprisonment. We call for the release of all those detained for peacefully demanding better living conditions, from the 11J protesters to those participating in the latest demonstrations. #FreeThemAll reuters.com/world/americas/h…

The release of Georgian political prisoners is not the end goal, it should be the minimum benchmark of any effort to reset U.S.-Georgia relations.

While some in Iran have seen their access to the internet restored, the regime maintains strict control over internet infrastructure. We continue to call on the international community to ensure that the Iranian people can communicate freely with one another and the outside world by supporting secure technologies and pressing authorities to lift internet restrictions permanently: freedomhouse.org/article/ira…

The US has imposed new visa restrictions on more than 100 officials and family members linked to the Ortega-Murillo regime following the death of Brooklyn Rivera. Brooklyn’s death must be subject to a prompt, thorough, independent, and impartial investigation, with those responsible held accountable. The ongoing harassment and arbitrary detention of his family members must also end immediately. We continue to demand truth, justice, and accountability for Brooklyn Rivera and his family, and the unconditional release of all political prisoners in Nicaragua. #FreeThemAll
The Murillo-Ortega dictatorship's relentless attacks on those individuals they deem a threat will not go unaddressed. These steps to impose visa restrictions on over 100 Nicaraguan officials and their family members reaffirm our commitment to justice and holding the dictatorship accountable. We demand the unconditional release of all political prisoners in Nicaragua and condemn the reported disappearance and detention of at least six of Brooklyn Rivera’s family and community members May 31. Alda, Korney, Jourbes, Jorge, Florencia, and Glenis deserve to freely mourn a tremendous loss, perpetrated by Murillo and Ortega’s brazen cruelty.

We welcome the decision of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in the case Rojas Riera vs. #Venezuela, through which the Court orders the State to take justice and reparations measures, including the criminal investigation and punishment of those responsible for serious human rights violations, as well as the closure of the torture center, El Helicoide. We urge the authorities to immediately comply with the release of all political prisoners and the effective shutdown of the detention center. #FreeThemAll
The release of Georgia’s political prisoners should be the minimum benchmark for improving US-Georgia relations. We welcome this joint statement by 22 governments highlighting the threat of transnational repression against Iranians living abroad. Freedom House's research identifies Iran as one of the world's top perpetrators of transnational repression. As Iranian authorities seek to silence critics beyond their borders, democracies must stand together to protect exiled communities and defend fundamental freedoms. One week after the transfer of detainees from El Helicoide, authorities have yet to publish official lists or provide verified information about their whereabouts and conditions. Families remain in the dark, unable to contact or support their loved ones. Lack of transparency surrounding these transfers raises serious concerns and cannot be mistaken for meaningful reform. Moving detainees from one facility to another does not address the structural crisis at the heart of Venezuela’s justice system. What is needed is not a cosmetic change, but a comprehensive overhaul of institutions to restore the rule of law, judicial independence, due process guarantees, fair trials, and access to justice.

As our latest Freedom on the Net report documents, Russia has intensified efforts to isolate its citizens from the global internet through platform blocking, internet shutdowns, surveillance, and the targeting of encrypted communications. These restrictions are not just about controlling information, they are about suppressing dissent and entrenching authoritarian rule. Read more: freedomhouse.org/country/rus…

Must read in @WSJOpinion from @leopoldolopez: As Venezuela looks toward the future, rebuilding the country will require more than political change. It will require restoring the institutions and legal protections that underpin a free society.
Delcy Rodríguez invades my home. Investors thinking about Venezuela should understand what that means. This loss is personal, but it should also be a warning to investors, writes @leopoldolopez on.wsj.com/4aiZrLE
