It was a privilege to speak today on a panel at @IUFforum alongside two very distinguished psychiatrists and two very courageous #Uyghur women activists, on transnational repression, resilience, building sustainable human rights advocacy and avoiding burnout.

She turned 64 today, it is the eighth birthday she has spent imprisoned, separated from her family, friends, and the life she built. Today, I find myself thinking not only about the years we have lost together but also about who she is-a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a physician and someone whose kindness touched so many people.
I struggled with what to write this year, and I don't have a grand message. What I do have is the same wish I've carried for eight years: that she be free.
We miss you, Mom.

Today, my sister, Dr. Gulshan Abbas, turns 64. This day should be a day of celebration — instead, today is a somber and grim day, where I am reminded that this is her 8th birthday unjustly imprisoned by the CCP.
My sister is a retired medical doctor. She is a mother and a grandmother. She is not an activist, or a political person. She is not a criminal. Her only “crime” is her relation to me, an Uyghur American who exercised my freedom of speech by exposing China’s ongoing crimes against my people. She is one of the examples of thousands of innocent Uyghurs suffering under the CCP’s brutality.
My sister should be free, spending her birthday with her loved ones. Instead, she spends it suffering, unjustly and arbitrarily detained. The CCP wants our silence and for us to believe that speaking out has consequences. However, I know that words have power.
Today, I call on the international community, our allies and freedom to honor my sister on her birthday by using your social media to call for her release using #FreeGulshanAbbas. Raise her case, demand information on her condition, and call for her immediate and unconditional release.

“I was born, raised and educated in my homeland in the Uyghur region. And when I was growing up, they used to brainwash us every Wednesday afternoon,” Abbas recalled.
“We were subject to political studies. And at that time, the Chinese party officials used to say it very clearly that the Chinese people were subject to humiliation in the last century — China’s century of humiliation. But they used to declare that this century is the century of retaliation, retaliation against the West, retaliation against the white people. So without realizing, Canada is playing a part of China’s retaliation against the freedom and democracy. The Chinese government is using our democratic systems, our social media platforms and the politicians — Canadian politicians, Canadian journalists, Canadian academia — to spread China’s ideological ideas and, basically, jeopardizing Canada’s future.”

Today, Dr. Gulshan Abbas marks her 64th birthday—her eighth consecutive birthday while unjustly imprisoned by the Chinese Communist Party. Despite committing no crime, she, along with more than one million Uyghurs, has been subjected to the CCP’s brutal repression.
In my new role on the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party and as a member of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, I will build on my work as founder of the Congressional Uyghur Caucus to press for her release and reunification with her family.
