There's a lot of confusion about Freemasonry.
I see a lot of comments and posts of degrees that don't even exist in the blue lodge.
First 3 degrees = blue lodge:
These are conferred in a local lodge and form the prerequisite for all appendant bodies. Rituals involve symbolic journeys, obligations (oaths of secrecy, fidelity, and moral conduct), signs/grips/words for recognition, and lectures on morality using tools of operative stonemasonry as metaphors.
1° Entered Apprentice (EA): Focuses on basic moral principles; brotherly love, relief (charity), and truth. The candidate is "brought to light," symbolizing enlightenment and the start of self-improvement. Lessons emphasize character building, the 24-inch gauge and common gavel as tools for time management and shaping one's life, and the apron as a badge of innocence. Ritual includes a symbolic journey around the lodge and an obligation.
2° Fellow Craft (FC): Builds on the first with emphasis on education, the liberal arts and sciences (especially geometry), and intellectual/moral growth. The "winding stairs" symbolize progression. Lessons cover the five senses, the importance of knowledge, and advancing from foundational morality to skilled application. Ritual involves passing between symbolic pillars (Jachin and Boaz).
3° Master Mason (MM): The highest and most significant degree. Centers on the Hiramic Legend (the story of Hiram Abiff, the architect of Solomon's Temple), teaching fidelity to obligations even under threat of death, integrity, mortality, and the hope of immortality. The candidate is "raised" from a symbolic grave. This degree completes the core Craft experience; rituals are solemn and dramatic.
So, in Freemasonry, a master mason is achieved at the final 3rd degree.
What about the rest - 4-32?
- York Rite (Primarily US; ~10 Degrees/Orders Across Three Bodies)
This system continues the Solomon's Temple narrative from the Blue Lodge in a more direct, historical/Christian-influenced way. It is conferred in Chapters (Royal Arch), Councils (Cryptic), and Commanderies (Knights Templar). Degrees emphasize completion of the Temple story, recovery of lost knowledge, and chivalric virtues.
- Scottish Rite (4°–32°, Plus Honorary 33°)
Often called the "University of Freemasonry." It offers 29 additional degrees (4°–32°) in dramatic, theatrical presentations exploring ethics, philosophy, history, tolerance, justice, and reverence for God. Divided into bodies: Lodge of Perfection (4°–14°), Chapter of Rose Croix (15°–18°), Council of Kadosh (19°–30°), and Consistory (31°–32°). Focuses on building a better world and personal reflection rather than strict Temple continuation.
33rd degree is an honorary degree.
The more you know... the more prepared you are.
