TMNT wasn't the only inspiration for furry parodies. Comics such as Equine the Uncivilized and Red Shetland (parodies of Conan and Red Sonya) launched in 1988 and 1989, respectively. Other furry artists were branching out to create either new parodies or entirely original works.

More furry heritage: Albedo's "prototype issue" was published in 1983, actually predating *TMNT*. Albedo's publication history would go on to be spotty and somewhat discontinuous, but was very much set in the vein of hard science fiction.

I feel like this 30's portrayal is a bit unfair to some of the 40 greymuzzles I know. :P That said, any greymuzzles out there want us to give you a shoutout?
Are you a 30's fur too? owo

More furry heritage: Many "furry comics", especially early on, were not by a single creator or even covering a single story, regardless of genre. Critters launched in 1985 and ran for 50 issues - a notable achievement for a black-and-white comic of the day.

By the '90s, independent comic creators were comfortable enough in the success of furry comics to experiment with new and unusual formats and styles, such as Snowblind's telling their stories of college-age romance, loss and ennui. The advent of webcomics didn't hurt, either.
