c. 1964–1965 West Germany Hofner Super Solid III Model 173, Galaxie Red, double-cut solidbody with bound rosewood fingerboard and pearl stripe position markers, three Hofner 511 Super/Nova Sonic humbuckers, Höfner vibrato tailpiece with integrated string mute, adjustable bridge, four-knob control layout with rotary pickup selector, black headstock with gold Höfner logo and closed-back tuners with translucent crown buttons, built by Hofner in Bubenreuth, Bavaria, West Germany.
The three chrome-covered Höfner humbuckers provide a surprisingly powerful voice for a mid-1960s European guitar, with the neck pickup delivering warm, rounded jazz tones, the middle pickup adding hollow and woody character, and the bridge pickup producing bright attack and strong upper-midrange bite; the rotary selector allows each pickup individually or combinations, creating a wide range of sounds from smooth and mellow to aggressive garage-rock tones. The bound neck with pearl stripe markers, closed-back tuners, three humbuckers, rotary selector and Galaxie Red finish place this example in the Super Solid III specification used during the mid-1960s.
The Hofner Super Solid III (173) was Hofner’s top-of-the-line solidbody model during the British Invasion era and was notably used by early British beat groups. Unlike many German guitars of the period, it featured full humbuckers, sophisticated electronics and a fast, slim neck, making it one of the most advanced European solidbody designs of the 1960s.
