⚫️With sorrow and grief we announce that: Georgetown's Economics Department has lost one of our foundational members, a pillar of our community, Marius Schwartz, who peacefully passed away on Tuesday, June 9.  [1/3]

He was utterly unique - brilliant, funny, insightful, kind, irreverent, generous, and a firm believer in truth.  He had an enormous impact on generations of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, on his department colleagues, & on the profession as a whole. [2/3]

👏 Forthcoming paper from one of our very own! Congrats to Alexandre for a great paper. Oster's δ —a go-to robustness check— can flip a coefficient's sign far more easily than zero it out, so a "large" δ can mask a smaller sign-reversing confounder. 👉Comes with a Stata fix.
Forthcoming in the AER: "The Effect of Omitted Variables on the Sign of Regression Coefficients" by Matthew A. Masten and Alexandre Poirier. aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.12…

🚨New NBER working paper alert 🚨 🤔2021–2024 was the worst U.S. inflation in four decades. The question: Did voters react to the rising prices, or to the shrinking paychecks? 😱We approached this paper with one major surprise: there is no official measure of inflation at the county level in the U.S. 🌟To study the relationship between inflation and electoral outcomes during, we first had to construct local inflation measures using county-level data on family budget costs and incomes. The answer? -> Check it out! 👇 🔗 nber.org/papers/w35301
