The remarkably well-preserved body of John Shaw Torrington, who was a member of the 1845 Franklin Expedition. Torrington, who served as a stoker in the Royal Navy, embarked on this journey with the ambitious goal of uncovering the elusive Northwest Passage. Regrettably, he met a grim fate, becoming the first victim of the expedition, which ultimately claimed the lives of everyone involved. In 1984, Owen Beattie, a forensic anthropologist, conducted an exhumation of Torrington's remains in an attempt to uncover the circumstances of his death. These remains remains are now considered some of the best preserved in the world.
