There are Internal and External Triggers Internal triggers are triggers that come from inside a person. These can be a memory, a physical sensation or an emotion. External Triggers come from a person's environment. External triggers can be related to a person, place or situation.

A trigger is anything that sparks a memory of a trauma that you have experienced. When you experience a trigger, some thoughts and memories associated with the trauma come back without warning. It can cause feelings of helplessness, panic, fear, unsafety and being overwhelmed.
