Here we go again... what would you tell this mom who's concerned about a large discrepancy between her child's classroom grades and standardized test scores?

19 responses so far 17 are cope 2 validations of the concern/mentions of grade inflation. both are showing at the very bottom of the thread.

y'all are right that the general mood of this piece is wrong - very Harrison Bergeron on a moral level, supported by a warped-to-dishonest presentation of the actual facts. But "gifted" programs are mostly garbage, and defending them just to get one over on the haters isn't worth it. "Multiple measures" gifted identification *does* make the whole endeavor capricious and non-academic, but it's been on the rise for 20 years. If that's what "giftedness" truly is, then sure let's scrap it.

Is this "gifted" status quo really worth going to the mat for? You may be defending essentially an SEL program, where the "gifted" money is being spent on dodgy "giftedness" PD and education buzzword conferences.

The compelling data on gifted ed comes from true acceleration We might need to study gifted programs as they really are, but it's pretty mishmash in/mishmash out (again, the people in charge of these see it as FEATURE not bug to make them that way) x.com/paulnovosad/status/206…

Contra my previous post, it's kind of wild that NYC's Gifted & Talented program no treatment effect on standardized math test scores. 1/

🚨STILL RECRUITING! This study aims to better understand how different types of reading support benefit children's learning. We are comparing AI-supported tutoring with Amira (AI Reading Tutor), one-on-one human tutoring, and non-literacy or business-as-usual activities to determine what works best for different students. ▫️Rising 2nd & 3rd graders ▫️Participation is fully remote ▫️1 to 1.5 hrs/week over 10 weeks

I don't know how it's come to this But I, as a parent, am now considering how I can put my kid through standardized testing so that I can evaluate where they actually are. Is there an app for that?
In a decade, Philly’s graduation rate jumped from 69% ➡️ 84% Dozens of teachers say it’s b/c admin forces them to pass failing students: “There’s a bunch of kids in my class that have F’s in reading & I’m probably going to pass them — I’ll bump it up to a D and call it a day”

I've been thinking about the social value of parents asking other parents about education things lately. While it *feels* like humans should be giving you better-vetted info, sometimes the social value of the ask is actually negatively correlated to information value
Think about how many people asked questions hoping not just for information but a little human connection ("what are the best graphic novels?" "what's the best way to prepare eggplant?") only to be told "You know about Google, right?" Now think about what it will be like with AI.

Unfortunately, moms groups are a particularly bad source of information on gifted ed - they disproportionately trot out myths about grade skipping, going "deeper" not faster into academics, enrichment BS, etc x.com/gtmom/status/203647181…

A woman recently asked my local mom Facebook group whether her apparently gifted, barely-missed-age-cutoff 4-year-old should skip a grade. Usually I just brace myself for these messes. This time, I coded the responses.

I'm tinkering with an AI chat tool that allows parents to share their gifted kid's situation and receive evidence-based recommendations for educational paths from gifted advisor avatars Hoping it can push some social-feeling buttons in a harmless way

P.S. sob story equivocated on the results of Tennessee's "harsh" reforms, but that seemed fairly dishonest to me, c.f. @karenvaites karenvaites.org/p/the-southe…
